My Theatre Work
Believe it or not, I got into theatre because a crush was in the school play and I wanted to see them. I watched the show and ended up taking an improv class. Crushes go away (literally and figuratively) and I instead fell for theatre.
In high school, I discovered our theater has a wall of painted bricks. Each brick is unique to an alum who dedicated their spirit to the Punahou theatre. Around the same time I was having an existential crisis related to purpose. I wanted a brick on that wall. I took every class, booked enough shows to make the cut-even joined their thespian society-and directed a black box show for my senior year. I never got a brick.
I didn't see my first, actual, Broadway show until I was 14 and tap dancing is like black magic to me - I'm no triple threat. I don't memorize entire scores anymore. However, none of that discounts the fact that my appreciation and connection to the art is something I'll always hold onto. It's something special to know the history, how every credit in the playbill fits together, and just to sit and watch from the audience.
